50 Gallon Fish Tanks Make Good Starter Tanks
The size of a fish tank matters greatly. Mainly because the greater the amount of water in your tank, the more diluted the fish waste such as ammonia becomes. This allows your aquarium eco-system to stay relatively clean and your fish to remain relatively healthy. So, the more water the better. A good rule of thumb is to allow 1 goldfish per 8-10 gallons of water.
If you opt to choose a saltwater aquarium, a 50 gallon fish tank should be the smallest size tank that you consider. The deeper and wider the tank, the less you have to worry about toxicity and pollution overloading the environment. When buying a filter for your 50 gallon tank, you should make sure that it can handle a minimum of 250-300 GPH.
If you think about a fish tank like a smaller version of some larger body of water, this concept is easier to grasp. You might be thinking that such a small fish has plenty of room in that tank. It isn’t just the size of the tank for their enjoyment, it is for what their body must be filtering as well. This is what we are talking about when referring to the ammonia content in the water. This is a by-product of metabolism and waste.
Larger tanks are not just more enjoyable to swim in, frankly the fish probably don’t care much. And, they are not just for your added enjoyment having that huge tank in your living space. While they do make great backdrops and conversation pieces, not to mention restful objects to gaze at, the larger tanks are really something to consider if you want to have a well-maintained and healthy ‘school’.
Think about how a small lake in your town can get so quickly polluted if enough people use it. After no time at all, it is littered with human trash and the water gets the same abuse from the waste from boats and other activities. So, while your fish might be able to live in a small and polluted tank, it will not take long for them to become sick from those confined quarters – upgrading to a larger 50-gallon fish tank or larger is a good idea.
