About Diamond Gems
Their fiery sparkle can catch your eye from across a room – and once it does, it is hard to pull away from their dazzling light. Diamonds have long captured the imagination, and have been fought for, worshipped and sought after for thousands of years the world over. There’s no denying this mineral wields magic.
The diamond gets its name from the Greek word for unbreakable, adamas. And they are truly formidable, having the highest hardness of any natural material. This quality has made diamonds appealing for use industry as well as in jewelry.
Gem grade diamonds are commonly clear in color. But chemical impurities such as nitrogen and boron and defects in the crystal’s structure will produce a colored diamond. Virtually every color in the rainbow is possible.
The additional hue can be good or bad. A faint brown tint just looks dingy and detracts from the stone’s value. A desirable intense yellow shade will do the opposite. Red diamonds are the rarest. More and more these fancy colors, as they’re called, are accessible to the average gem lover. But in most every case, unless your budgeted is unlimited, your pink diamond necklace or blue diamond ring will be set with treated stones. No matter – they are real diamonds, and usually high in clarity, as well, which contributes to their beauty. Flash a fancy color diamond on your finger and get ready for swoons!
