Tips to Avoid Wedding Cake Disasters
One, avoid falling in love with a beautiful cake that tastes awful. Just because the cake looks good does not mean it tastes good. And not all bakers and bakeries are created equal. You will want to taste some cake samples from the baker who will be making your cake.
Two, reconsider whether you want to follow the tradition of saving the top layer of the cake to eat on your first year anniversary. The truth is, after a year in the freezer the cake isn’t going to taste very good. You’d be better off going ahead and enjoying the cake on your wedding day and then in a year go out and buy a new cake of the same type and use it to celebrate your anniversary.
Three, think very carefully before agreeing to let a friend or someone in the family who likes to bake make your wedding cake. It can be very tempting as it would be a great wedding money saving idea. And, you know that the person making the offer is just wanting to help and you may worry about hurting their feelings if you don’t let them make your wedding cake.
The problem is that making a wedding cake is not as simple as making any every day cake. It truly does require a measure of skill and experience to create a beautiful wedding cake that will stay beautiful up to the time it is ready to be eaten at the reception. No doubt you have seen wedding cakes that started to lean and you wondered if the whole thing was going to topple over onto the floor.
Four, don’t let the provider of your wedding cake deliver it to the reception site too early. About two hours max before the reception is a reasonable delivery time. As you can imagine, if the cake is delivered too soon that provides more time for something to go wrong. Maybe the temperature in the room is not just right to maintain the cake. Or, there is always the possibility that someone setting up the reception area will knock the cake over. You might want to consider placing your wedding cake toppers on at the last moment as well, for a similar reason – especially if they are really unique. Your baker is likely to do this, but it never hurts to find out if they can do it once it is set up.
Finally, you might even consider going the trend toward wedding cupcakes. If one cupcake gets messed up, it’s not like having the whole cake ruined.
