Basic Water Softener Repair
Today, there are several brands of water softeners available. Most of them generally work the same way, with variations in design and function. Clear Water Concepts in Arizona has been working with all major brands of water softeners for the last 16 years. If you suspect that your water softening system is not functioning properly, there are a few things you can do to find the problem.
- First eliminate some simple, and common problems. Have your water in your home checked to verify if the water is hard or soft. Often times you will find that the water actually is soft. This happens more often than you think, as you get accustomed to the feel of soft water.
- Verify that the settings on the water softener are correct. The time of day, hardness, and capacity settings should be set properly. If the clock does not reflect the correct time, your softener may be regenerating at times when you are using water. This would cause the water heater to refill with hard water. If your system is not keeping time, you may have a bad timer motor, or transformer.
- Make certain that your softener is plugged in, and the outlet is operational.
- Verify that your water softening system is using enough salt. If the softener is going through the normal amount of salt then the system is most likely working correctly. If the softening system is not using salt then you may have built up a salt bridge, or you may have a valve vacuum problem.
Bridging occurs due to a variety of circumstances. A hard layer of compressed salt usually forms about a foot below the top layer of salt in the brine tank. The water that’s in the tank is unable to get above this hard layer, or shelf of salt, which keeps it from dissolving more salt for regeneration of the water softener.
You need to break through this hard layer of salt, or bridge. One way to do this is to take a broom handle and push it into the salt. Be careful not to hit the bottom of the tank or you can rupture the tank. You could also shake the tank back and forth. Often this will break down the bridge and won’t damage the brine tank.
