Many bass anglers, especially southern largemouth bass fisherman, swear by the use of live bait for catching above average to trophy size fish. The use of live bait fishing baits for bass does indeed produce many citation fish, as larger fish are older, and more wary than their smaller brothers and sisters. Wary fish such as this are much more likely to hit live bait, as nothing can mimic their natural forage better than that very forage!
A very popular live bait rig for bass is the “shiner rig” employed by the aforementioned southern bass anglers. All this rig consists of is a large float, hook, and shiner. The angler simply casts out the rig and waits for the float to “dance”, which is caused by the shiner growing nervous due to it’s proximity with certain death in the form of a bass.
