The Best Place to Install Your Security Cameras

Installing security cameras at your home or business is a great way to deter thefts or, if a break-in does happen, to help the local police catch the criminal who did it.  But a camera will only do its job if you install it in the right position and in the right area.  Here are a few tips for finding the best place to install your outdoor security camera effectively.

Usually the best spots for installing your camera are on the sides of your house of your business, there are two reasons for this.  First, even if you have a wireless camera, they will most likely require a ready power supply.   There are cameras that are battery powered, but they require constant monitoring of their battery levels to make sure that they won’t run out of juice when you need them the most.  Second, most cameras require wires to be run from the camera to the receiver, and to save on the amount of cable run and the actual aggravation of doing it, it is better to place the camera closer to the receiver.  Even with wireless cameras, the camera must be place within the wireless range of the receiver, and this usually limits the camera’s range to being placed just outside of homes.

Now that you’ve narrowed down your choices a little bit for where to install the camera, try to find out what areas you want to watch with your camera.  Entrances, especially ones in darkened corners of your property are very good places to place your camera.  Also make sure to place your camera high enough to keep it out of reach of any vandals but also to make it highly visible.  Much of the value of security cameras comes from deterring potential thieves from striking and convincing them to move down to the next house or business, so don’t waste this by hiding the camera.
