Bull Terriers as Rescue Dogs

Flick through any of the major animal rescue centres and you’re guaranteed to find an abundance of English bull terrier rescues; unfortunate dogs who have been abandoned, ill-treated or both.

Thanks to alarmist stories in the media the poor English bull terrier is demonised like no other. For this reason, an ever-increasing number are turning up at animal rescue centres. Battersea Dogs Home regularly welcomes this breed into their collection of canines for rehoming and like to feature them on their web page to show people what lovely dogs they are.

BullieSOS are also concerned about the welfare of the English bull terrier and cite the case of Tara, who was thrown down the stairs and fractured her paw so badly, that by the time she came into their care, she could no longer walk, and was having to crawl around. At the time of writing, the decision on whether to amputate the leg is in the balance. Like most animal shelters, this one relies entirely on donations.

Bullies in Need was set up by a group of bull terrier lovers concerned about the number of these dogs being abandoned. Their idea was to co-ordinate available ‘bullies’ with available homes, which they are doing very successfully. The organisation is run by volunteers who devote their spare time to the cause. They are entirely dependent on donations and raise funds in many ways, including sponsored dog walks. Their website includes a problem page for ‘bully’ people to exchange ideas and a column focussing on the need for foster homes.

Bullies in Need recently merged with American Bulldog Rescue.

If you are on the lookout forĀ  a free puppy, then you could do a lot worse than paying a visit to one of these two organizations. As long as you can prove you will give the puppy a good home, you could leave with your very own bull terrier or bulldog.
