Butterfly Knife Enthusiasts
Butterfly knives are a unique option for the knife enthusiasts. A butterfly knife, also known as a balisong, is a type of folding knife. These unique tools have two handles that conceal the blade within them. A practiced user can quickly open one of these knives with one hand, which is why knives of this type are illegal in some states. This practice is known as flipping and can be injurious if the user has dangerous intentions.
These unique knives originated in the Philippines and are very popular there for use as a utility knife. Some urban legends even state that every Filipino owns at least one of these knives. Butterfly knives have a rich history, as their use is documented back to about the year 800. They spread around the world when Spanish and French explorers visited Southeast Asia. American soldiers that spend time near the Philippines brought butterfly knives home with them.
Blades of these tools may be made from a number of metals, though antique specimens are usually equipped with carbon steel. Handles can be wooden, plastic, or made from a similar material. The handles may also be carved and can come in a variety of colors.
Due to their dangerous nature, the United States outlawed these knives in the 1980′s. Various states have different rules regarding the ownership, carrying, and use of a butterfly knife. Still, these items are produced in American by native companies such as Benchmade and Spyderco. Different models released by manufacturers like this usually have unique model names, just like cars. An example of a renowned model is the Spyderco Spyderfly. Still, the highest valued and the knives considered highest quality are those that are produced in the Philippines by native craftsmen. A butterfly knife can be a high valued investment that may be envied by knife enthusiasts everywhere.
