Princeton University defines trust as something that we have confidence or faith in. Something about which we have certainty because we have experienced it in the past. Do your customers trust you?

If you answered “no” to the above question or you’re simply not sure whether or not your customers trust you then here are three tips to help you out.

Consistency, Consistency, and More Consistency

Notice that one of the definitions of trust says trust is having certainty about something because you have experience it in the past. The Sun is pretty consistent; it rises every morning and so when it goes down at night we trust that it will come up again in the morning. The Sun is the best example of consistency.

The truth is that most businesses are horribly inconsistent. This inconsistency can be accidental or purposeful. Accidental inconsistencies happen when a solid process is not in place within a business that puts out similar results. An example of an accidental inconsistency is a product defect. The product should weigh five ounces, but the manufacturing process put out a product that weighed six ounces. There are books on operations management that explain how to get rid of these types of inconsistencies.

The second type of inconsistency is much more intriguing. This inconsistency is coming from you and the other business managers at your organization. In an attempt to continue making the experience better for the customer, you are providing them with inconsistent experiences. This leads to a lack of trust in your organization. The customer isn’t certain what to expect when they show up and this usually means they go somewhere else where they do know what to expect.

Times change and some of your processes might need to change, but make sure to remember that the customer wants a consistent experience; otherwise they cannot trust you.

The most profitable stores seem to be the ones that offer the most consistency. Wal-Mart stores all look close to the same and they all offer low prices. Home Depot has those orange vests that are known across the world and most of the time their store layouts are very similar.

Chances are you have had an experience where something changed at your favorite store and you soon stopped frequenting the store. It might have even been a change for the better, but you just wanted that same experience that you had been having for years. Human beings crave consistency. If you want your customers to trust you then be consistent.

As a brief recap of how factoring works: Companies sell goods or services to customers. These companies don’t always require a cash payment and so they end up with receivables from their customers. The company can sell these invoices or receivables to a third party Factor. The Factor pays a percentage up front, usually somewhere around 75 percent of the face value of the invoice, and then remits the rest when the Factor collects from your customers. The Factor also charges a fee, usually around three percent. This fee covers the collection process and the fact that they forwarded you money.

Once you understand the process of factoring, it makes it easier to see what to look for in an invoice factoring company. First, you will want to see how much the company offers for your initial payment. If your customers are safe enough, meaning they have a good payment history, then it is not unheard of to receive 80 to 90 percent of the invoice face value at the initial disbursement. However, this payment will vary depending on the risk of nonpayment by your customers.

One item that you will want to pay special attention to is how the Factor will deal with collections. If your customers usually mail in payment then you will probably have to notify them that you’ve sold their receivable and you or the Factor will need to provide them with the new payment address. Customers can feel turned off by the fact that they are no longer working with the company they thought they were. Make sure to work out an arrangement with the factoring company that will ensure a smooth transition for your customers, otherwise you might never see any of them again.

Along a related line of thought you will want to make sure that the factoring companies you work with will treat your customers how you want them to. For some companies where the customers always make the payments this isn’t a big deal. However, if some of your customers don’t pay on time a Factor may not be as lenient with them as you are. This means they could turn them over to a collection agency or worse. Make sure to find a company that will treat your customers how you want them to be treated.

Selling receivables can be a great way for a company to improve their cash flows. However not all Factors are created equally. You’ll want to find one that will treat your customers right, make a solid first payment, and not kill you with fees. Find out more at ClockWork Accounting.

Many freight forwarders are large, multinational corporations with locations all over the world. Several have ISO 9001 certification to assure quality. Some forwarders specialize in shipping to specific regions or have especially strong ties to one country. For example, there are many freight forwarders with headquarters in Japan and that gives them a competitive advantage for shipments destined for that country.

Freight forwarders contract with trucking companies, rail roads, ocean and air carriers, as well as import agents overseas. In addition, they prepare paperwork and present or file documents on behalf of the exporter of record.  Because of this, a power of attorney must be filled out by exporters granting authority to the freight forwarder to sign documents on the exporter’s behalf.

Good service, however, can be hard to find. As many as ten different companies may unload and reload freight as it makes its way to its final destination. Errors and mistakes are frequent and it is difficult to maintain control of a shipment once it has changed hands.

Freight forwarders are often left to deal with the mistakes of others, whether it’s an error by the exporter or a rail road. Further, fixing problems is difficult because transportation is deadline driven. If the trucker fails to deliver freight to the rail road on time, then goods may not arrive at the port of export by the cut off. In which case, there’s little that can be done to correct the situation other than push for a credit from the trucking company. Once time is lost, it can’t be regained, which is devastating when time lines are critical.

Obtaining good service from a freight forwarder entails carefully selecting the freight forwarding companies and carefully screening the people in their employ for expertise. It is also a good idea to develop business relationships with more than one freight forwarder as part of a larger international supply chain strategy.
