Emerald rings suffer from a few disadvantages when compared to the other prized gemstones. Firstly, good quality natural emeralds are hard to find. They very often have inclusions, or small cracks in their internal structure. This can make them particularly brittle if accidentally knocked against a hard surface. The second problem simply compounds the first, because emerald is a softer material than diamond, ruby or sapphire. It can be scratched and ruined by rubbing against diamond jewelry in the same jewelry box for example. So a good tip if you have emerald jewelry of any kind – rings, necklaces, earrings or whatever – is to keep it stored separately from all your other gems. this is similar to the fragile nature of peridot rings in concept.

Assuming you are still in love with the idea of buying an emerald ring, even knowing that it will need far more care, you are left with two general options: a beautiful large stone, or an equally beautiful emerald cluster ring. The decision you make will be reflected in the price you will have to pay. Just as natural and flawless emeralds are hard to find, so too are the bigger stones; and it is the rarity of them that drives up the asking price. In other words, emerald cluster rings will usually be cheaper than a ring with a single emerald, even if the total carat weight is identical. The smaller ones are just so much easier to source.

The great thing about the gemstone cluster rings is that all sorts of designs can be made out the stones, a little like building a mini-mosaic. If the emeralds are flanked by diamonds, it adds a nice aesthetic quality, as well as having the practicality of using hard diamonds to protect the softer emeralds from accidental damage. Of course, an emerald cluster ring made with just that single gem is far easier to repair – and far cheaper – than a solitaire. With the latter, if you chip the stone, you have a very expensive repair job on your hands. With the cluster ring, chances are you will damage one or two of the small stones, which can then be selectively replaced with new ones.

So for peace of mind and for reasons of cost, emerald cluster rings can be a far better proposition than their ostentatious cousins the solitaire rings.
