Factors to Consider When Choosing Chinchilla Cage Bedding
When you think of chinchilla bedding you have to consider several factors:
Ease of cleaning
Comfort for your chinchillas
Safety for your chinchillas
As you know that chinchillas would certainly not clean up after themselves, and so it would probably be a good idea to keep a bedding away from your chins as much as possible. However, maintaining a wire bedding or floors for your chinchillas could be tiring for their small feet. And so a solid bedding would probably be your best option. Do not worry because cleaning it up weekly is just fine. Unless, of course, you have a small pet home. You should always have a large chinchilla cage, though. You could choose either a drop-in or a slide out bedding. Or better yet, train your chinchillas to litter only in a certain part of your cage so you do not have to worry about them sleeping in their own wastes.
Some prefer to use old newspaper while some likes wooden shavings. But be careful because not all wooden chinchilla cage bedding is safe for them. The cedar and pine wood is one of the most dangerous because researches have proven that they could inflame your chinchillas lungs because of its scent. Furthermore the phenol in these type of wood are said to accelerate enzyme production in their liver which could cause it to malfunction.
Although there are some treatments available that could reduce these woods’ harmful effects. For example drying it with kiln are said to reduce these harmful toxins from the wood. Or better yet stick to wood that is free from such substances.
It is also advisable to create wooden panels or shelves where your chinchillas could sleep that is away from all the dirt and food. A hammock might not be customary but a lot of pet owners have claimed that their chinchillas love them. Make sure though that these are sturdy enough as you do not want them falling off in their sleep.
