Commencing a Career in Accounting

Whenever you are just starting out your career, it can feel totally lonely. You haven’t had an opportunity to prove yourself and you are hoping that someone will take some faith in you. I have three guiding points that can apply for all those looking to get that entry level accounting job.

1. Public Accounting – The advantages of starting up your career in public accounting is that you simply will gain lots of experience quickly. While accounting has its standards that all industries have to adhere to, there is still many nuances to master in different industries. Being exposed to these nuances will make you a very important commodity to many future employers. The downside is that you may have to be comfortable with a bunch of work hours and possible travel. Not much room for a family life.

2. Corporate Accounting – It is possible to launch your occupation as a Staff Accountant for an organization. The salary will not be as fantastic as public accounting to begin with but you’ll not have the heavy work volume. Just ensure that the job is well-rounded and not pigeon-holed into one accounting duty.

2. Internal Audit Department in a Company – Working in Internal Audit can give you great experience when starting out. Working as an Internal Auditor you will get access to the entire operations. You will not just see things on a runway level but you will get to gain a look at your company from a much higher and important level. Many auditors end up moving into important operations or accounting roles down the road because they understand what makes the entire system work. Depending on the size of the company you may have to do quite a bit of travel. Be sure to ask questions if this is not a choice for you.

Regardless of the path which you ultimately look into, the two important skills that you can develop so that you can succeed. First, you must be excellent at writing the perfect resume for the open position. Companies need to hire candidates who are regarded as specialist in their field. A generic resume is not going to assist you in obtaining interviews. Last, always be networking. The standard worker last 3.2 years in their place of employment. If you are going to be successful, you have to create rapport with co-workers and managers. They very well could be your next hiring manager.
