How To Cultivate Butterfly Bushes
If you are looking to increase the odds that live butterflies are going to flock to you garden then you might want to consider planting a Butterfly Bush. If you do, your lovely winged visitors will be along soon after!
Butterfly bushes belong to Figwort branch and includes many varieties. Basically, they are flowering plants, with blossoms that can be found in a number of colors ranging from light green to deep blue to a bright red.
If you are curious why butterflies find them so desirable, first take a good look and then take a good sniff. Butterflies love bright colors!
And Butterfly Bushes offer them a host of brilliant blooms. But you will notice when you smell them that they are sweet – incredibly so. And if your nose can pick up on that, imagine what the scent does to a butterfly! That rich odor is reflective of the nectar the plant contains – the essence of the butterfly diet.
If you do plant a few of these shrubs, you will find that butterflies aren’t your only visitors. Bees will be by for sure – they like nectar almost as much as butterflies do. Moths will flutter through now and again. And if you have some red flowers, keep your eyes peeled for a hummingbird or two!
Because the plant has proven so popular and desirable, horticulturists have been working hard to create commercial variations. In the past decade or so, Butterfly Bushes have expanded dramatically as a result. You can find them in virtually any color, and they have become much more hardy.
Their increased availability is good news for butterflies. Don’t worry if your neighbor is planting some at the same time you are – there are more than enough hungry butterflies to go around!
These plants tend to take care of themselves but use common sense. If you are in a real dry spell don’t be afraid to give them a good watering. They need to be pruned frequently – this will encourage rapid and expansive growth, resulting in those blooms the butterflies so love!
Indeed, with a little care and attention, your butterfly bushes will be butterfly central in no time!
