CVD & HPHT Diamonds
Diamonds are one of the most desirable, and desired, items on the planet. Their brilliant beauty and their rarity have combined to make the finest examples incredibly valuable. With this value comes the obvious desire for people to have more and more – a need which until recently has been hard to fulfill.
However, incredibly, we are now able to produce man made diamonds in mere days instead of millions of years. There are two main methods of achieving this feat – the CVD method, and the HPHT method. The HPHT method (High Pressure High Temperature) was the original process, and makes fine quality diamonds, but it is an energy intensive process. CVD – Chemical Vapor Deposition – is much cheaper, and works by releasing carbon vapor in the right conditions, so that it recrystallizes as a rough diamond. This method is increasingly being used to churn out hundreds of synthetic diamonds, for an eager market!
