Driving Fear: Is it in You?

For those people who have driving phobias, even a mere trip to their local store is a mental anguish already. A person who is plagued by driving anxieties may experience symptoms which are similar to that of anxiety attacks.

In extreme cases, these people would refuse to drive to work, go out on vacations or even take a job promotion that is not covered by the bus route. The mere thought of boarding a car and driving it already makes them tremble on their knees.

Their phobia of driving becomes so bad that they refuse to take a driving exam and acquire a driver’s license. If you are unaware or uncertain if you have a driving phobia or not, take a look at some of the usual symptoms and see if you have them; usually they would consist of trembling, heart palpitations, profuse sweating, inability to focus, lose of control, panic attacks while driving and thoughts of being way out of reality.

Scary thoughts and anxiousness while driving and being afraid of certain situations such as passing over or under bridges, merging onto heavy traffic or the interstate can be exaggerated and become extremely uncomfortable.

driving phobiaIf you have one or more of these symptoms or signs of panic attacks, it is highly probable that you have a driving phobia. For the most, their driving fear might have developed due to an accident in the past or it may also be that they just had a bad experience while or from driving.

There is usually some sort of basis in your past experiences and the brain has already learned of the danger involved, regardless if there really is one or not. This is a reaction called “fight or flight” and most fears are based on this. The fear is triggered and becomes activated in situations wherein dangers are recognized.

Most fears and phobias are considered subconscious reactions to potential dangers which are twisted way out of proportion. One way to resolve this is to alter your conditioned response and emotional impact it has brought you. There are also home treatments for anxiety that can actually help you learn how to better manage this situation.  This might take time, but with this approach you will feel more and more confident and calm the next time; instead of anxious and scared.
