Feeding Tropical Fish
If you enjoy the hobby of keeping a fishtank aquarium here are some suggestions to feed your fish that they will surely enjoy!
Tropical fish can be fed a number of different types of food and do enjoy a variety. It is wise to read up on the different types of fish you have and find out what type of food they need. For example: Some are carnivorous and need a protein laden diet, while others are bottom feeding fish and you would need wafer flakes that sink instead of float.
If you feed them the same food day in and day out you will find them eating less and less. You can find a good supply of different foods at your local aquatic store. Find a store that has a fish specialist to consult with. Join a local aquatic group where you can find people to talk to and learn from.
Flake food alone has many brands and types each having a different taste, so give your fish a change up every so often. I buy 3 different types and switch up on a daily basis. You don’t have to worry about flake food going bad if you keep it in a dry area away from the light.
Every so often as a treat, you can feed them some freeze dried brine shrimp or tubiflex worms. If your fish are large enough, the ultimate food that that is more expensive would be actual live foods such as mosquito larvae. One easy way to get some is to keep a rain barrel in your back yard and they will happen naturally. Just scoop some out with a net and bring them inside. Put them in your tank and watch the fish enjoy. Make sure they all get eaten otherwise you may have some mosquitoes in the house.
One of the best and basically free foods available almost anywhere is the lowly earthworm. You can gather them up and even keep them for the winter. They continually propagate if you feed them dead maple leaves, left over mashed potatoes, corn meal, or oatmeal. Keep them in damp soil but not wet in a cool area. If you would rather not look after worms for food you can in many areas find a local bait shop that has them. Small worms are ideal for large Cichlids otherwise they should be cut up into manageable pieces. A good pair of old scissors would suffice.
Another free food that nature provides and you definitely want to get rid of in your house is the nauseating house fly. A freshly swatted fly is fine food for larger fish. Once they get used to them, your fish will be on the look out for their owner to give as a treat.
No matter what you feed your fish always make sure to remove any excess food that doesn’t get eaten so that your aquarium doesn’t get foul and murky.
Your fish are your pets so feed them well and they will flourish.
