How Clay Plaster Works On Your Walls
Written by the Staff at Home Bedroom Decor
As you look for new ways to make your home seem refreshed and renewed, sometimes your ideas run a bit dry. You might have thought about the popular and easy to think about techniques, like painting, wall paper and other wall art ideas. However, what probably doesn’t immediately come to mind are the wall plaster techniques. These techniques can be done by the DIYer, but are best left to the professionals for best results. Things like Venetian plaster are not as easy to apply as paint. You can certainly learn how to do it, but having someone with the proper training will make the finished product look much more impressive.
Wall plaster is actually an older wall treatment technique, much more common in the past than today. Actually, it isn’t so much a ‘wall treatment’ as it was just how walls were made. They used smaller thin strips of wood, over which the plaster was applied. Now, we mostly have sprayed in drywall compound over drywall walls with taped seams. It is hardly romantic or anything that makes your walls look or feel alive. It is almost too boring to see the same type of hopper-sprayed drywall walls over and over. At least there is some variety with various paint techniques or textures.
One issue with paints, though, is their volatile organic compound (VOC) content. These compounds are known to cause health problems and especially for those with chemical sensitivities or children, these paints are actually not recommended. The thing is, these paints are not special. Most of the common paints sold at your local home improvement warehouses contain them. To be fair to them, though, consumer demand is just starting to make no and low VOC paints more popular. You can thank the ‘green revolution’ for this.
As mentioned, there are also wall paper options that you can find that will give your walls more depth and texture. Again, wall paper is more permanent or at least much harder to replace than just applying a different coat of paint. Beyond that, wall paper is relatively expensive, when compared to paint. Another option is to go with something that is similar to the previously discussed Venetian plaster. Let’s talk about clay plaster as a wall treatment. It is applied in a similar fashion as the Venetian plaster, but is actually an Earthen product that can be dyed while wet. This allows it to be applied using a trowel and letting set to dry. The finished product is a done deal. No need to tape or sand anything. No need to paint or even worry about minor dings or chips. Since the color is mixed throughout, it can hide little imperfections. Also, clay plaster walls are resistant to dust and mold, so you can spend more time enjoying your warm new space than cleaning and worrying about it. For the new standard in green wall treatments, go with clay plasters.
