How Return Of Premium Term Life Insurance Works
Today term insurance seems to be a very popular option for people who want to get a cheap life insurance policy. However, there are some downsides to buying a term policy; like the fact that if you get a policy and never use it during its time frame. You could spend thousands of dollars to protect you from something that essentially may never happen while you own that policy.
Now there is an option to solve that problem. It’s called return of premium term life insurance, and in this article I’m going to be going over the basics of how this type of policy works.
How The Return Of Premium Option Works
First off, return of premium does exactly what it says, it pays you back if you did not use your life insurance policy over the time frame written in your contract. The real question you might be wondering is how much do I get back if I don’t use it? That’s a different story. However, in most cases you will get back 100% of what you paid in. That’s a pretty good deal.
So what won’t you get paid back for?
There are two things you will not get paid back for in typical policy. The first is any additional riders you might add onto your policy like a disability rider or guaranteed renewal rider. They won’t do this because they obviously don’t want everyone loading up on everything with the thought they are going to get all of their money back when the term period is up.
Second, you won’t get paid back for any special health conditions. For example, if you had heart issues the insurance company is going to take that into account and charge extra as a result of that health condition. However, no matter how bad your medical situation is, getting something back instead of nothing is always better.
Talk To Your Insurance Agent
Finally, consider talking to your insurance agent first. He will be able to run several illustrations to show you the cost involved as well as what kind of return on payment you could expect. They may show you that having a variable life insurance policy makes more sense given your particular situation and circumstances.
