How to Shop for Memory Foam Mattresses
If you’re currently in the market for a memory foam mattress there are some things you should consider before taking the plunge. Although you may be convinced that you need to replace your current mattress outright, you can improve the comfort of your mattress quite easily through the use of a memory foam mattress topper. Not only would this be a great way to save several thousand dollars, but it can also provide some of the unique benefits that only memory foam can offer. Regardless of whether you choose a topper or a new mattress, when it comes to shopping for memory foam it’s important to understand the importance of the material’s density. The density rating of memory foam is particularly important, since it determines the quality and support capabilities of the foam itself.
So, just what is the right density rating? The answer is that there is no “right” density rating, though there is a recommended range, which is 3-5 pounds per cubic foot. The higher the density rating the more firm the mattress will feel, and the more support it will provide to the sleeper. The leading manufacturer of memory foam mattress, Tempur-Pedic, produces mattresses on the higher end of the density scale. By and large, their mattresses rank the highest among consumer satisfaction and are considered the “gold standard” when it comes to foam mattresses. With that said, there are other manufacturers on the market that produce somewhat similar products at lower densities. The only way to know for sure which density level works for you is to lie down on a few different mattresses. If there is one thing that’s for certain, it’s that you should avoid so-called “bargain” memory foam mattresses, since these will likely fall short in terms of both support and comfort.
