Pink Earrings Are The Latest Fashion
“Everyone knows that pink earrings are the latest fashion,” Flora said. “And, oddly enough, I have been buying pink earrings for years. All of the ones I have are really unusual. Many of them have been made especially for me by famous designers. What do you think about that?”
Bernice said, “I’m impressed, that’s for sure. They must have cost you a lot. Does your husband pick them out or do you?”
Flora said, “Morgan doesn’t know I’ve got them. I would never tell him. Truthfully most of them were given to me by various lovers I met while traveling through Europe, and others were given to me when I traveled to Greece and Morocco.”
Bernice said, “I didn’t know you had lovers.”
This short story could easily have been written about these lovely earrings.
“That’s only when I travel, babe. Here at home I’m the epitome of married fidelity. I’m on the church council and I’m president of the museum ladies group.”
“I would like to see some of your pink earrings,” Bernice said.
Flora said, “I’d love to show you, but you’ve got to promise you won’t mention them to Morgan.”
“Of course, of course. I hardly ever see him except in the checkout line at the Winn Dixie. And then he’s wrapped up in reading the National Enquirer or that real trashy one, the Star. You know the Star, the one that published supposed pictures of Jesus at Kennedy’s inauguration.”
Flora said, “He buys them, you know. He keeps them under the bed. Whenever I find them, I set them out at the curb with the trash.”
Flora went to her closet and pulled out several large jewelry cases and set them on the bed. “These things are heavy. Of course, I have several other cases of jewelry with different stones.”
Bernice stood looking in amazement as Flora threw out jewelry all over the bed.
“This is the most amazing collection of jewelry I’ve seen in one spot. Do you mind if I try on some?”
“Of course not, you know you’re my best friend.”
Bernice picked up a pink pearl bracelet. “This is unbelievable, so delicate.”
“It was given to me by a Sheik in one of the Middle Eastern countries. I forget his name.”
“You forget his name?”
Flora said, “Well, I just can’t pronounce it. Go ahead and put it on with the matching earrings. Yes, he also gave me this beautiful pair of pink pearl earrings.”
