Power Yoga

You may have heard the term power yoga and wondered what in the world it is.  I was in the same boat as you until I did a little research on the topic and found out that is it essentially a yoga class with a little more intensity to burn more calories.  Adding the name power to the word yoga makes it seem like it will be a better workout for you.  Yoga focuses on building strength while working on your flexibility and power yoga is no different in this area.  You will get a great workout no matter what form of yoga you decide to try but the Western-type yoga styles do focus more on the physical fitness side rather than the spiritual side of many yoga classes in India.

The main difference between the East and the West, in this sense, is that more focus is placed upon the asanas and the ‘power’ aspect of the practice.  Yoga means union.  It is the union of the physical with the spiritual; the union of the ‘I’ with the ‘us’.  No matter how you define it, it is all very powerful.

There are certain types of yoga practice that are more characteristic of certain styles or types of poses, known as asanas.  The ashtanga school is often thought of as a more power type of yoga.  It has many poses that are for strength and endurance.  One might say that all of yoga has these intentions and this would also be true.  However, there are unique features of ashtanga versus, say vinyasa.  A vinyasa practice is more flowing and has more of a series of continuous asanas that allow for a more graceful look.

There are also types of yoga that are more about an ‘inner practice’.  These focus more on intention, meditation and loving service than any outward expression of physical postures or asanas.  Kriya yoga is an example of this type of practice.  You may want to continue your search and discover more about yoga today.
