Pregnant Women and Laser Hair Removal: a Word of Warning
It is known that a pregnant or breast-feeding woman can not undergo a treatment of laser hair removal. The are many reasons, here are the main ones.
The main reason is because the body of a pregnant woman rejects everything that is abnormal in the body itself. Laser hair removal can be defined as “abnormal.” The same happens with other hair removal techniques, such as with wax. In some cases, intolerance or allergic reactions to the wax have been noticed.
Another reason is that during pregnancy there are drastic hormonal changes. The skin is more sensitive and an increase in the level of progesterone is noticed, causing hirsutism, namely the presence of hard and coarse hair. Women who have never noticed the presence of hair in the abdominal area may be surprised to realize that now this area is covered with black thick hair. For this, laser hair removal is useless.
Last but not least, we do not recommend laser hair removal for a pregnant woman for lack of knowledge of possible side effects. There are no studies on pregnant women who submitted to laser hair removal. This also applies to women breastfeeding their babies.
A serious and professional aesthetic or medical center should advise pregnant women not to undergo laser hair removal, to avoid any risk. The international medical regulations clearly state that pregnant women should not receive any type of medication or undergo any medical procedure (such as laser hair removal) that is not essential to his health or that of her baby.
It is useful however to know that the laser used in laser hair removal is not teratogenic, that is does not cause malformations to the fetus. In fact, the thermal effect of the laser reaches a maximum depth of 4mm, which means that it is restricted only to the area of the skin.
