Pyrenees Orientales Department in the Languedoc, France
One of my favorite departments in the South of France is the Pyrenees Orientales and the Roussillon in Languedoc Roussillon! This French Catalan area is in the deep south, borders Spain and is a very popular hub for Languedoc tourism. The city of Perpignan is, in my opinion, a gem of a small city. The young woman are foxy and stylish in that Spanish way and the shopping available reflects the trendy nature of the city.
Restaurants and bars abound, but the old city centre is small enough that you don’t feel overwhelmed. It is easy to get a feel and sense of the layout of the place after just a weekend. It’s a particularly entertaining city if you happen to roll into town on a day that the local rugby team, the Catalan Dragons, are playing.
Outside of the city there are some lovely little villages set against the dramatic majesty of the Canigou, a towering mountain range. And then along the coasts are some atmospheric fishing ports, like Collioure and Port Vendres, where you will find some fine seafood.
