Rock of Aphrodite
I’m a sucker for history and whenever I go on holiday I like to search out the heritage of whichever country I’m in. Don’t get me wrong, I also like to spend as much time as possible, lounging by the pool, sipping a strong drink and catching up on my reading. But there’s only so much of that you can do. And when I get bored I head off to my car to explore my surroundings.
Last year I visited Cyprus, which as you may or may not know is the supposed birthplace of Aphrodite, the God of Love. The actual location of her mystical birth is the rock of Aphrodite or, as it is locally known Petra Tou Romiou. I won’t pretend that there is a lot to see except a big rock stuck out in the ocean, but it was a very secluded and tranquil spot where I was happy communing with nature for a couple of hours. I saw a few hardy souls braved the waters to swim out to the rock, but I was getting all the love I needed staying on dry land. Who needs to get wet. When you’ve got the souvenir shop?
