A Second Chance for Tiger
You would have had to have been in a coma not to have at least heard that Tiger Woods returned to the professional golf circuit at the recent Master’s Tournament in Augusta. Even though the Augusta National Golf Club is an extremely controlled environment, no one really knew what to expect when Tiger set that first golf tee and started his practice swings.
Fortunately, the crowds were filled with golf fans rather that tabloid devotees. Most of them came to watch their favorite superstars and that label certainly applies to Tiger Woods. They cheered when his play was good and seemed
sympathetic when he fell short. His personal drama has yet to run its course, but if the fans at Augusta are any measure, the world of golf seems ready to accept his apology and give him a second chance.
Perhaps the reception for Tiger’s return is not so surprising after all. Golf is an individual sport and while golfers follow the pros and spend a fair amount of time watching tournaments but they are far more invested in their own game. They enjoy seeing Phil Mickelson poke a 6-iron shot through a tiny gap in the pine trees heading for the 13th hole in his bid for a third green jacket, but they would rather be packing for one of the golf vacations they’ve been dreaming about all year.
Lots has been written about the lessons that can be learned from golf about the discipline and dedication it takes to master all of the details and nuances. Golfers are on their own when they are out on that course and shine or fail based entirely on their own efforts. It doesn’t take much to lose focus and that always translates to poor performance. That may well be why someone who has strayed off center is allowed that second chance and encouraged to get back in the game.
