Shopping For Non Prescription Glasses
There are two sets of people who might go out shopping for non prescription glasses. The first group consists of those who are looking for sunglasses, or who like to wear glasses as a fashion accessory – many Hollywood celebrities with perfect eyesight have stepped onto the red carpet wearing “fakes” in recent years. These fashion glasses are called non prescription because they just have normal plastic “lenses” rather than the shaped lenses designed to correct defective vision.
The second set of people who might wish to buy non prescription eye glasses are people who are middle aged and their eyesight is beginning to deteriorate. They will normally need reading glasses for seeing things close to them, rather than the specs for shortsightedness, which usually afflicts younger people, and which they need for seeing long distances (eg for driving).
If you are in the first group, you will be able to get fashion glasses online or from clothing accessory shops fairly readily. Things are still a little more difficult for the second group however. First, you need to know just how bad your vision is, and this can potentially defeat the object of non prescription glasses, because you’ll need to go and get your eyes tested by an expert – an optician or optometrist. This is always a good idea in any case, because they will often be able to detect other more serious health issues, like hypertension, diabetes and even in extreme cases brain tumors.
The thing to remember is that even though you should go to an optician to get your eyes tested, often you can just pay for the test and take the prescription somewhere else to obtain your glasses. This can save you a lot of money, especially online. Some online stores ask you to fill in a form with the details from a recent eye test and they then send you your “non prescription glasses” through the mail, generally at a fraction of the price you’d have paid at the optician’s.
The other great way to get real non prescription glasses is at a participating drugstore or pharmacist’s store. Often, the big chains will provide a service where you try on different strength glasses, and then try to read the text printed on a card. You keep trying different strengths until you can read the card perfectly, and then you can buy a pair of non prescription glasses of that particular strength. Just remember in this case that you really should go and see an optician every couple of years just to make sure there are no problems going undetected.
