Single Bed For Your Kids Visiting With a Boyfriend Or Girlfriend
One of the most interesting, and awkward, moments for a family is that first time when a child brings home the significant other of the opposite sex. While some parent’s have no problems with non-married couples sharing a bed, others want to have separate sleeping areas based on more traditional values. This is one of the primary reasons why a single guest bed may work for your home. If you have an extra room to devote to a guest room, having a single bed in that room will leave no room for another person. Now, you have to know that most college age kids and older will see what you are trying to do, but in your house it is still your rules. Most mature and respectful boyfriends and girlfriends will respect your wishes, albeit grudgingly.
It wouldn’t be inappropriate to even ask them to avoid the sleep over all together. However, as you know, if it doesn’t happen in your house it will probably happen elsewhere. So, it is best to be upfront with your feelings about such matters and then be comfortable with the way in which you raised your child. If this is something that is still not comfortable with you in your home, just let them know. You could always talk to your son or daughter’s ‘friend’ and get a sense of their intentions as well. It might be that they were raised with a different set of principles and simply have no reference point for your uneasiness with this whole arrangement.
But, as discussed, in the end, the single bed is going to be the best way to go. Just insist on sleeping in separate rooms. This will also eliminate the need for a smaller bed or mattress. If they really want to sleep in the same bed, do you really think the size of the bed will make a difference? Probably not. At least with a single bed in your home, you can rest easier knowing that you are doing your part.
