Skiing Around Vienna, Austria
Vienna, the capital city of Austria, is located just at the Eastern fringe of the Alps. Though the climate within the city itself is not suited particularly well to skiing (there are only a few dozens days of snow in the city and most of it turns to slush within hours anyway), there is some amazing skiing to be found in the vicinity of Vienna.
A good transport system makes for an abundant skiing near Vienna. With a car ride of about one to two hours things become interesting with regards to skiing. Indeed, skiing has a very long tradition in the Vienna region and the Semmering (982m), first remarkable ski resort of the region was developed as a winter sports resort as early as in the 1920ies. Today the Semmering (just about 80 kilometers to the South of Vienna) is still one of the most popular ski resorts near Vienna. Each weekend thousands of Viennese skiers are going to the Semmering. Recently, the Semmering attracts skiers from Slovakia and Hungary as well.
Other popular ski resorts around Vienna are Annaberg and Lackenhof in the Oetscher region (about 1.5 hours car ride) in the west of Vienna. Further west is the Hochkar (1400-1800m), the ski resort with the most alpine environment. Several modern lifts and some dozen kilometers of groomed slopes (parts of it well above the tree line) guarantee fine skiing.
The ski season around Vienna is just as long as in the rest of Austria. Usually the lifts start around late November / early December and close during April. At the Hochkar, the ski lifts and groomers are open even to first weekend in May. Modern snow making facilities guarantee skiig possiblities even if natural snow is scarce.
