Snake Proof Boot Pros and Cons
Snake boots are increasingly popular, and it’s not hard to see why. If you have a job, a hobby, or simply live in an area where you might run into venomous snakes, it’s really good to know you have protection from the worst case scenario. There are a wide variety of this type of footwear, and they have become especially popular with wild turkey hunters in the Southern United States where many of the best spots are also in swampy areas known for rattlesnake, water moccasin, and copperhead populations. There are many pros and cons that come with snake proof boots, and they should all be examined and considered prior to making any type of a purchase.
Some of the most common positives of snake proof boots should be pretty obvious. These include:
- Protection from venomous snake bites
- Protection from non-venomous snake bites (which can still become infected)
- Peace of mind that comes from that protection
- High quality boots for hiking, hunting, camping, or other outdoor activities
- Solid re-sale value
- Wide variety of choices available from over a dozen different companies
Not only is the protection from snake bites hard to overlook, but the high demand for these boots means even if down the road you don’t need them or decide to get rid of them, there’s a good chance you can still get a really good price in the $40-50 range or even higher for selling a used pair. This is way beyond the average you’re going to get for any other type of normal footwear that doesn’t offer the same advantages as a quality pair of snake boots.
However, there are some negatives that can also be associated with snake boots, and these should not be overlooked. You need to consider all sides, the pros and the cons, of any pair of snake boots before moving on with a purchase. Some of the most common cons associated with these products include:
- Much higher cost than other types of boots
- Limited sizes available – meaning less custom fitted boots, like for “wide feet,” or for odd sizes like half sizes
- Can be overly warm or insulated for hot weather environments
Snake proof boots do cost a lot more than regular boots, which can be a problem for some people who are on a cash strapped budget. The limited size issue does not involve women versus men, or young adult versus child, but is more an issue for people who have odd half size feet, or who have unusually wide feet. There are enough customers for normal shoes that companies often produce some brands or designs for people with this issue, but that’s not always the case with snake boots. In addition, a good pair of snake boots goes up to just under the knee. This is great for protection, but if they’re designed to be insulated swamp boots, then that pair of snake proof swamp boots could be way too hot and not have enough breathing room in really hot weather.
