Saving Space with a Drop Leaf Table

Over the past fifty years rooms have become smaller in size. This reduction in room size has brought a resurgence of the drop leaf table onto the furniture market.

During the earliest of colonial times the drop leaf table was a very common piece of furniture. Rooms were small and people moved from place to place as our nation grew. During the 1800′s houses were large with very large rooms. Drop leaf tables lost their appeal until the 1940′s. Following the war years when Americans first adopted the idea of everyone owning a home, rooms once again began to diminish in size. During the late 1940′s and early 1950′s drop leaf tables came back into favor. Most were reproductions of earlier styles.

During the last half of the twentieth century Queen Anne style tables with leaves that could be inserted into the center of the table became the first choice for dining rooms across the nation. It seemed vital that every home have a formal dining room and a fully opened table centered with dining chairs surrounding it.

Recently, more and more of us have down-sized, moving into smaller homes and apartments. In many cases the formal dining room has been omitted. Yet, families still need a dining area that will seat the entire family, especially during the holiday season. For that reason drop leaf tables have made a comeback.

The benefit of a drop leaf table is that it often only occupies approximately a third of its total opened size when the leaves are not raised. These tables will fit against a wall leaving plenty of walk space throughout the room, often giving the room the appearance of being larger than it is. Yet, when the family arrives for the formal dinner, it takes very little effort to slide the table into the middle of the dining area and raise the leaves, creating a full size dining table.

Additionally, for those who prefer to eat in a designated area of the kitchen, the drop leaf table is the perfect breakfast table.

One of the real advantages of shopping for drop leaf tables today is that the market is full of used drop leaf tables that are in excellent shape. These tables can most often be located at auction house or estate sales. In fact, most of the older tables are of a better quality, being constructed of solid hard woods unlike many of the newer tables in retail stores.

For the home with a smaller dining room, one should consider purchasing a drop leaf table as it will save space when not in use. When it is time to raise the leaves for the family dinner, the family will be quite pleased to discover that they have a full size dining room table.

Create your Own Furniture

When you move into a new house there a lot of new expenses involved. You have to worry about not going over your budget. It is difficult to know where to cut costs, because you don’t want to have to worry about buying new things later on because you decided to cheap out early on. There is one area where you can get away with cutting corners with out having to pay the price. You could decide to do create do it yourself furniture. Now I’m not talking about creating furniture from scratch, that could actually end up being more time-consuming and costly. What I am thinking about is unfinished furniture.

There is a lot of variety whenever it comes this type of furniture and it is incredibly economical. You will have quality furniture that will look like you have spent hundreds of dollars on at a fraction of the cost of retail. Unfinished furniture is beautiful in the home. The only problem is you will need to put them a little more to sustain the furniture. This really isn’t that difficult as long as you have some patience. In fact, it can be very satisfying to create something yourself. It could be a nice family moment.

Just don’t confuse unfinished with ‘college’. You can see that some ‘furniture’ is nothing more than laziness. When we are talking about unfinished, this is anything but the case. You can find very appealing and well-made furniture that is just waiting for you to complete with your favorite stain color or paint choice.

In some instances, the furniture can be a bit less of quality because of this fact. But, in most cases, the unfinished styles have to be more well-made because the craftsmanship will not be hid beneath the paint or stain. Just some things to keep in mind as you look for your next set of dining or bedroom furniture.

Outdoor Patio Furniture

What a beautiful day today! It is a rare occurrence where I live to get nice weather on the weekends prior to July 5th, but this weekend is a glorious exception. Because of this I have a long list of “honey-dos” to tackle before I can enjoy the weather. All I really want to do is escape to my patio and kick up my heels, but this is highly unlikely without getting all of my “checkmarks” in place first. My friends are all going to be outside enjoying their time and all I can think about is my dreaded list. From the looks of things, it will probably come out looking something like this.

My to do list:

I am tired already! Actually, after looking at that list, it seems like I’ve been able to squeeze in quite a few patio breaks in there. It’s like most things in life, I suppose. The hardest part is getting started. And, even harder than that is if you think about it too much. You just need to get up and get moving and the rest will take care of itself.

After all, the end result of this whole list is a more exciting and enriching time on my patio. I really shouldn’t complain, but that’s what we do, right? Okay, I’m off to work. Hopefully, your weekend projects let you get more time outdoors as well.
