There are quite a number of specializations within the world of ultrasound practice. Sonographers will normally register their expertise in particular area of ultrasound through ARDMS or American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography. They can always register more than one specialization with the proven competency. They usually achieve that through cross training on their job and acquire qualifications in other ultrasound modalities. For instance, a sonographer who is registered under Obstetrics and Gynecology ultrasound may undertake necessary training and practice in abdominal modality and looking for registration in that particular area after sufficient experience and certification. Sonographers who acquire registry in multiple specializations are in good position to widen their marketability. That often leads them to better employment opportunities and higher income. Therefore, sonographer is indeed a great career choice.
