I am a hockey player and I really like using the newer composite hockey sticks. They are light weight so they are easy to move around and this keeps me active with my stick. Most composite sticks are also engineered to have better performance characteristics when you are shooting and passing. One of these key features are the new flex profiles. Most new ice hockey sticks have the flex point moved down closer to the blade and this gives you a quicker loading and release cycle when you are shooting.

The major down side to these sticks is the high price tag. Most start at $100 and the higher end sticks can top $300. They can break just as easily as a wood stick so I have a tough time shucking out that kind of cash a couple of times a season.

The upside to these is that they are really lightweight and have good snap to them – and I’m not talking about when they break either. If you have used wood sticks your whole life, like most people have, you might want to give the composite ones a go, just to see for yourself what they feel like. Sometimes, it’s more about the player and their individual form that will make one stick perform better than another.

In the end, you’ve got to like it yourself. It might be endorsed by the best of the best, maybe even your favorite players. All this means nothing if you can’t get off the kind of shot you want with it. So, invest some time and research into seeing if they are right for you. You can always go back to your wood stick, those will probably never go away. There is just something special about the feel and performance of wood that will always be my favorite choice – unless something better comes along next season.
