Timber decking is best constructed out of hard woods as softwoods require continual maintenance and treatments.  If a softwood is used then it is imperative that it is planed down first to prevent splintering and it is treated with preservatives before being laid and at regular intervals after it has been in use for a short while so that it lasts longer in the elements.

Construction of timber garden decking is not difficult if a simple design is being worked too.  Generally, the timbers that create the deck surface rest on beams and joists that are in turn supported by upright posts that are held firmly in the ground with a concrete material.  This sort of construction is used so that air can circulate freely around the timbers which allow it to dry off after long periods of rain or other precipitation.  This reduces the chances of mold setting is and damaging the wood beyond repair.  If you are looking at a more complicated design that incorporates split levels and other features such as pergolas or privacy screens then it can be a wise move to employ a professional as it can be a difficult challenge, even for an experienced DIYer.

Decking fits wonderfully well into all types of gardens and is especially great around garden water features such as ponds or brooks.  This is because wood and water look very natural together and are great in creating sharp lines in an architectural garden as well as being equally efficient in creating a rustic type effect in a more natural looking garden.
