The Fragility of Peridot Rings
Here is what someone wrote regarding their experience with their peridot ring.
“I’ve had a white gold peridot ring for several years now, but I never realized just how fragile it was until a little while ago. Because it looks just as amazing as emerald or rubies, I had assumed it would behave just the same way to physical or chemical threats. But I was wrong. It turns out that peridot is significantly softer than these other gemstones. This means that it scratches easier and is more liable to break if it’s struck too hard. Accidental damages something that you can never avoid entirely. But with a peridot ring you need to be even more careful than with other precious gems. I suppose the lesson to be learned is that a peridot ring should be treated like a fragile and delicate flower – beautiful to look at, but don’t let it get hit with a power tool.”
There is a point to be made in how to care for the rings in your jewelry box. Some gems and stones are stronger or more delicate than others. You’ve just heard the example of this from the story. You see, it is the inherent property of the stone that makes it stronger or more susceptible to scratching and other damage. The diamond is one of the strongest stones available. If you have some diamond rings or earrings, you’ll want to store those alone or together with other diamonds. This way, they will only come in contact with each other and not the ‘softer’ stones.
It is difficult to get a sense that a stone is soft, but it is only on the molecular level, not to the touch. This is just as true of emerald rings as it is of peridot. So, just like how it is a good idea to store your diamonds in a separate place, it is also wise to keep your emeralds and peridot away from contact with other rings and jewelry in your jewelry box. Peridot rings have a delicate nature about them, it is a shame to have them damaged from improper care or storage. Don’t let this happen to you.
