The top 5 reasons to insulate your garage door now
Howdy! Like many others, all of the news lately about a green revolution and energy savings may have you thinking about what you might be able to do in your home be a part of it all.
One thing that you can do that’s quick and easy as well as being relatively inexpensive is to insulate and weatherstrip your garage door. Here’s my five top reasons for getting this done now:
- Saving money on your energy bill. This is the biggie. Proper insulating of your doors, windows and garage door only cost a little when you do it. But over time it can save you a ton of money.
- The environment. Energy you are not using is energy that doesn’t have to be produced. And the less energy that has to be produced the fewer fossil fuels are being burned. This is one of those happy cases were doing something for yourself and something for the environment are the same thing.
- Noise reduction. If you use your garage is an extra family room for parties, or like I do as a workshop, noise traveling into and out of your garage can be a concern. I know my next-door neighbor doesn’t want to hear my circular saw on Saturday morning. And if I’m doing some particularly complex wood carving, I don’t really want to listen to his lawnmower. A properly insulated garage door will help cut down on noise transmission.
- It will help to transform your garage into something more than a simple automobile storage device. Figure this way — even if you only have a two-car garage it’s still quite a large space. Probably 20 x 20. If you keep your garage organized, when you pull the cars out you have a large open space that can be used for a variety of activities. My personal favorite: kids birthday parties. Just roll out some indoor outdoor carpet and let them make as big a mess as they like to. And of course, those of us who use our garage as a workshop for hobbies and automobile maintenance number in the millions.
- Honey-do points. Yup, she loves it when you actually get stuff done around the house. This project is fairly simple and quick. Initial outlay is not much at all and you can get it done in a Saturday morning.
