Ultralight Fly Rod
Not all manufacturers are producing a top quality ultralight fly rod anymore. Some companies are simply putting out junk that isn’t going to last you very long, with spools that are nothing more than a line holder at best. If you come across a fly rod that looks like junk and has a huge price tag on it, avoid it at all costs. It is going to be junk, and the price tag is simply to get you to buy into thinking it has some value to it because it costs as much as the higher end rods. It’s an old marketing tactic, and one that most people will fall for. If you look hard enough you are going to be able to find an ultralight fly rod that will be able to cast properly for years.
If you’re new to the sport of fly fishing, don’t worry about getting the most expensive set up right from the start. You’ll need to develop some coordination skills and handling of the equipment first. You wouldn’t want to end up developing a distaste for the sport after spending what could be thousands of dollars on fly fishing equipment; rods, reels, waders, tackle and all the rest.
What makes an ultralight set up so great is that it can give you a great feel for the fight. With a lighter set up, you can also enjoy fishing for smaller game fish, like bluegill and crappie. They give a great fight and are fun to fish for, so don’t rule them out. There are many types of fishing tackle and flies specific to a variety of species. Once you get into this sport, it can really become more of an obsession than anything else. If you start fly fishing and realize that you do want to invest more time and energy into it, then by all means, buy some more expensive equipment. It is similar to sports like golf, where the equipment definitely will enhance your experience. The occasional fly fisher would not appreciate an ultralight fly rod in most cases.
