Wet Rooms – Tile Thoughts
Wet rooms are a trendy bathroom design style which has become extremely popular in the last few years. They are a bathroom which has been tanked (in other words, waterproofed completely) to provide a more open floor plan. Most often you will find the typical restroom amenities like a toilet and sink, but they tend to have a walk in shower as well. It is also not completely unusual to also find a bathtub incorporated into the design. Due to the complete waterproofing that is required for a wet room’s functionality, you will notice that one kind of nonporous tile or another is generally used to cover the floor, ceiling, and walls. This will be a brief overview of some of the tile choices commonly found in this design style.
One popular tile choice is granite. There are a large number of patterns available, as well as colors to choose from, making it an easy choice for a home improvement project. With the ability to handle high traffic it holds an advantage over other softer and less rugged tile choices. It can also be very cost effective for most budgets.
While there are more cost effective choices out available, many choices will put a much larger dent in the bank account. You will probably find that porcelain tiles and ceramic tiles are similar to granite in their ability to fit into your budget. And like granite, they also have a vast range of patterns and colors to accent almost any home decor. Both ceramic and porcelain tiles are more brittle than granite, and need to have someone with experience behind them to install it correctly.
A lot of people really like to use travertine tile, and it goes beautifully with a lot of walk in shower enclosures which are typically used in a wet room installation. Because travertine is a naturally occurring stone it is able to produce an inviting, warm environment for you to enjoy your experience. Natural stone of almost any type needs to be sealed before it is used in a project like this. So be aware that you may need to have your travertine tile resealed from time to time. This may be true even if they have been sealed by a professional.
