Why Tin Roofs Stay Strong
Ever wonder why it is that many old buildings still have their original tin roofs? I did, which is why I looked into the matter a little more closely. It felt strange to me that of all things, a tin roof should stay up while so many other kinds of materials collapse over time. Tin seems so fragile, but in actuality it’s pretty tough. The real reason why tin roofing retains such strength is that in essence it’s not made of tin at all! At its core, this kind of roofing material is really hardened steel. It’s only called tin roofing because a coating of tin is applied to the steel which remains underneath. It’s always been a cheap way of keeping the steel relatively rust free. The real reason why tin roofs stay strong is that they’re actually steel. Go figure!
